Top of The Rock- New York (USA)

Up there is Top of the Rock!

There are many places in New York from where you can see the skyscrapers from above. You can have a cocktail in one of the hundreds of roof bars in the coolest buildings, see them from your hotel or from one of the classic and massive steel giants. Top of the Rock at the  Rockefeller Center is one of them. Someone told me this, and not the Empire State, is the best place to see the city from the heights. But in my quick 48 hours visit there was no time for everything, so I will have to come back to be able to tell you.

Anyway, Rockefeller won't let you down. This is one of the busiest places in the city. Night and day. In fact, I could see for myself the extreme security, at the corner of the building where the Top of the Rock is, there was a policeman with the biggest gun I have ever seen. Bigger than in the movies, I mean. I tried to take a picture, but he was not keen of showing off and at the end I decided to give up as a picture is not as priceless.

As I was saying, all the area is quite busy. There are loads of people at the complex at night, enjoying the summer terraces, walking around or queueing to go to the top.

The entrance is where it says Observation Deck, 50th Street, next to Radio City Music Hall, other interesting place you might want to visit.

Budapest Airport is closed

What a day! If we did not have enough with all the flight cancellations due to the snow accross Europe, Budapest's airport has been shut due to an electrical problem in the control tower. Flights have been cancelled or diverted to Viena and flights are not expected to resume until tomorrow morning (10 am for the moment).

Check the website before travelling to the airport.

Most of our European flights are cancelled, please check the list of cancelled flights(PDF, 29KB) for today. 

All Intercontinental flights from Amsterdam will depart as scheduled. Please take a de-icing delay into account. If you travel to Belgium, Luxemburg, Germany and Paris you will be offered to travel by groundtransportion.  

Please check the status of the flight before travelling to the airport. They give some guidelines in their website, but please be aware if you are holding a ticket for tomorrow and your flight for today was cancelled and these two flights are in two different tickets, they won´t help you with the flight for tomorrow. I just had an argument with them about this. I can´t believe it!

Snow in all Europe

Over the past few days snow is  forcing to flight cancellations accross all Europe. Areas worst affected are North of England, Netherlands and Belgium. But also countries like Germany or Switzerland, basically everyone is affected. I strongly recommend you to check the status of your flight before travelling to the airport.

The first low cost in Tanzania

Fastjet for the moment only flies from Dar Es Salaam, Tanzania to two destinations: Kilimanjaro y Mwanza. We can see the Kilimanjaro route being a big success among adventure lovers.

Is SAS closing down?

Some sources are saying that Scandinavian Airlines (SAS) is about to file for bankruptcy tonight. The company is struggling with all the low cost competition.

Let's hope it is just a rumour and we won't wake up with bad news tomorrow.

Alert: new low cost in London!

Well, not new, but what it is new is that they will have a hub in London! More flights to choose from yay! 

Norwegian, the second largest airline in Scandinavia, will have a hub in London Gatwick from April 2013.

Watch out, Easyjet, here they come! (And they offer free wi-fi on board).

What's going on Wizz Air?

I was quite shocked when I read that Wizz Air is charging now for the hand luggage. The price is 10€ and people started complaining.

Looking into it, it is not as bad as it looks. Their aim is to reduce the number of items of hand luggage in each flights. It turns out to be the same as Ryanair, you can carry hand luggage, but not huge items.

If you are carrying a small piece like a big handbag or a rucksack, you can do so for free. If you are planing to travel with one of the hand luggage trolleys, you will have to pay for it. How many times have you tried to place your items in the cabin struggling because someone has taking two or three pieces of hand luggage with them?

A track transit train connects the three buildings at Terminal 5.  Customers with flights departing from Terminal 5C need to stay on the train when it stops at Terminal 5B and get off at the final stop, which is Terminal 5C.

How long does it take to travel from Terminal 5A to Terminal 5B and Terminal 5C?

Customers are advised to allow 15 minutes to travel from Terminal 5A to Terminal 5B and 20 minutes to travel from Terminal 5A to Terminal 5C.  Customers need to be at the gate 20 minutes before their flight departure time.  

Are there lounge facilities in Terminal 5C?

There are no lounge facilities in Terminal 5C.  Eligible customers can make use of the exclusive Galleries Lounges in Terminal 5A or Terminal 5B before proceeding to Terminal 5C prior to departure.

Islas Airways stops operating

If you live in the Canary Islands you are aware you can fly in the community with Binter Canarias or Islas Airways. From today, the last one has stopped all their flights.

An Air Traffic Controllers strike is due to take place in Portugal from 29th of June to 3rd of July 2012. As a result, many airline related activities including flight operations may be affected. This includes possible flight cancellations. TAP Portugal strongly recommends that travellers rebook for alternative dates. In an attempt to limit inconvenience to our mutual customers, TAP has implemented the following procedures in order for its Trade partners to carry out rebooking and/or refunds themselves: Update 28/06/2012: cancelled strike.

TAP Portugal’s services will be disrupted due to an Air Traffic Control strike in Portugal on the 24th & 25th May 2012. As a result, TAP Portugal and all other carriers flying to and from Portugal expect some irregularities to their services and possible cancellations. Skyways files for bankruptcy

The Swedish's airline Skyways has filed for bankruptcy. According to the official statement, the closure of Cimber Sterling has affected them obliging them to stop operations.

Skyways Express AB with its daughter company City Airline AB have today been forced to stop all payments.
As a consequence all flights have also been cancelled with immediate effect. Both companies will apply for Bankruptcy in the morning.
Therefore there will be no use for passengers to go to the Airport.
The owners of the company have decided not to fund the company any longer and therefore the Board of Directors was forced to decide to stop all payments and to stop all flights.
“It feels very sad for the Company and for our passengers that will be immediately affected. It is also very sad for the personnel also at risk to lose their jobs. We have come far in turning the company around to turn the company around but after the Bankruptcy of Cimber it became almost impossible to continue” says Mikael Wångdahl CEO for Skyways and City Airline.

Ryanair's website is under maintenance this weekend. That means customers won't be able to check-in on-line for several hours. 

So now you know... just wait ;)

Ryanair customers should be aware that the carrier’s website will be down for “upgrade maintenance” this weekend.

It will not be possible to check-in online between 1600 on Friday May 18 and 1200 on Sunday May 20, and bookings and flight changes will not be allowed for 48 hours between 2200 on Friday and 2200 on Sunday.

As Ryanair charges customers who fail to check in and arrive at the airport with their boarding passes, passengers should ensure they visit the website before Friday afternoon to print out any necessary documents.

A statement on the carrier’s website said:

“Ryanair wishes to apologise to all passengers who may be affected by our website closure which is unavoidable in order to upgrade the www.ryanair.com website."

Another low cost stopping its operations. In this case is BMI Baby. After being bought from Lufthansa by IAG, owner of British Airways, will stop operating from September. Some of its flights will stop from June leaving around 500 people unemployed.

Danish Airline Cimber Sterling Files For Bankruptcy

Danish airline Cimber Sterling has declared bankruptcy after its owners decided not to continue their financial support of the company.

“Because of this the board of directors has decided to declare the company bankrupt,” the company said in a statement.

In August last year, Mansvell Enterprises, an investment vehicle of Ukrainian businessman Igor Kolomoisky, offered to buy out minority shareholders in the airline for DKK1.50 kroner per share.

The offer for minority shares followed Mansvell’s acquisition of a 70.8 percent stake in Cimber through a directed share issue on August 1

Kingfisher's future doesn't look bright

Kingfisher's future is not looking good. They have realised an statement where they confirm they have been taken out the BSP. That is usually the first step has been taking to some airlines that finally went on bankrupt:

Statement from KFA - 7th March 2012 Mumbai;  March 7, 2012----Due to the accounts getting attached  by the tax authorities,  we were not able to make a payment to ICH (IATA Clearing House) which resulted in a temporary suspension. We are working with the tax authorities  and expect the accounts to be un-attached shortly.  As soon as this is done, we will pay our dues to IATA and get reinstated. Meanwhile, Kingfisher Airlines continues to operate 200 flights to 46 domestic and international destinations.  The ICH  suspension does not impact our guests travelling on any Kingfisher Airlines flight or our flight schedules. Our guests can continue to book with confidence either directly with Kingfisher Airlines or through their travel agents.
